Kyushu/Okinawa in Winter

Climate and Clothing

Temperatures will range between 5°C and 15°C with occasional cold spells. The cold sensation is particularly intense in inland areas.
Okinawa has temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C. In winter, it can be chilly, so bring a heavy jacket or sweater.
Clothing: should include a wool coat, a heavy sweater or jacket, gloves, and a scarf. Thick shirts, sweaters and warm pants are important.

Beppu Onsen (Oita Prefecture)

From Beppu Station, go to "Blood Pond Hell. It is the oldest hot spring in Japan and has been in existence for over 1,300 years.
The next one is "Umi Jigoku," a beautiful cobalt blue hot spring.
Although it has a cool color, it is a hot spring with a temperature of 98 degrees Celsius.
From there, we recommend the "Kamado Hot Springs" or the Beppu Ropeway "Kinrin-ko" course.
Early in the morning in winter, a fantastic view of steam rising from the surface of the lake can be seen.

Kurokawa Onsen (Kumamoto)

Surrounded by lush green mountains, 30 inns are clustered in the hot spring resort of Mt.
You can also visit the open-air baths.
It is listed with two stars in the Michelin Green Guide.

Unzen Onsen (Nagasaki)

As you approach the hot springs, you can smell the sulfur and enjoy the natural scenery of the hot springs.
You can enjoy the historic hot spring resort with the sound of hot water coming up from the earth and the steam rising violently.

Yufuin Onsen (Oita)

A walk from Yufuin to Yunotsubo Kaido and a route to nearby Floral Village are recommended.
You can also enjoy eating and walking around.

Christmas Market (Fukuoka)

The event will be held in Hakata, Tenjin, and Nakasu in Fukuoka.
About 120 stores will be open, including food and general merchandise stores.
There will also be illumination events to make Christmas festive.

Nagasaki Lantern Festival

This is a celebration of the Lunar New Year for the people of Nagasaki Chinatown.
It has become a major event in Nagasaki's winter season.
In early February, 15,000 lanterns are decorated from Nagasaki Chinatown to the center of the city, and various events are held.

Nakijin Castle Ruins (Okinawa)

The ruins of Nakijin Castle in northern Okinawa Prefecture.
From the ruins of the castle, you can see the precipitous cliffs, deep green mountains, and the East China Sea. This World Heritage site is also famous for its cherry blossoms.
Cherry blossoms bloom from late January, and the fantastic nighttime illumination of the cherry blossoms and castle walls can be seen.
