1. Types of public transportation in Japan

Railways that cover the whole of Japan, and are particularly useful for intercity and long-distance travel. There are JR (Japan Railways) and private railways (for example, Keihan Electric Railway and Tokyu Corporation).

It's a convenient means of transportation in urban areas, and big cities like Tokyo and Osaka have many subway lines.

They are used for travel within cities and between regions. There are city buses and express buses, which are particularly useful for accessing stations and tourist spots.

Although it is more expensive than the bus or subway, it allows you to travel freely along routes, making it convenient for sudden travels or when you have a lot of luggage.

2. How to purchase tickets

You can purchase tickets from the automatic ticket vending machines at stations and bus stops. Follow the instructions on the screen to select your destination and the number of tickets you want, then pay with cash or card.
【【Using transportation IC cards
If you use an IC card such as Suica or Pasmo, you don't need to buy a ticket. Just charge (deposit) money onto the card in advance and tap the card at the ticket gate to board the train. You can charge the card at stations or convenience stores.

Please put your cell phone on silent mode and refrain from talking loudly while on the train. When the train is crowded, please be sure to offer your seat near the priority seats to those who need it.

Public transport can be very crowded during peak times such as rush hour and tourist seasons, so be sure to allow plenty of time when travelling.

Please double check your luggage before getting off the train to avoid leaving anything behind. If you do happen to leave something behind, it is a good idea to inquire at the lost and found center at the station.
